Course Descriptions

English

Any of the following Grade 12 English courses can be used as the compulsory English credit for the Mature Student High School Diploma.

English Comprehensive or English Transactional is recommended for students planning on taking post-secondary courses that will involve a great deal of reading and writing.

The ability to use writing skills to express, convince, and persuade using proof from reading material, if necessary, is imperative in all Grade 12 English courses.

English Comprehensive Focus (40S)

(1 credit)

This course provides students many opportunities for extensive writing. Paragraphs, essays, and other writing forms will be created throughout the course. Students will develop the skills that allow them to be analytical thinkers and writers. The course focuses equally on fiction (novels, short stories, plays, films, and poems) and on non-fiction literature (newspaper and magazine articles, documentaries and editorials). This course is suited to students interested in Humanities related fields in their post-secondary studies.

English Transactional Focus (40S)

(1 credit)

This course provides students many opportunities for extensive writing. Essays, non-fiction articles, editorials and other writing forms will be created throughout the course. Students will develop the skills that allow them to be analytical thinkers and writers. English Transactional requires more research than in English Comprehensive as the course focuses mostly on resources that are non-fiction such as newspaper and magazine articles, and documentaries. This course is suited to students interested in Math and Science related fields in their post-secondary studies.

English Language and Technical Communications (40S)

(1 credit)

This course allows students the opportunity to develop practical writing and communication skills that are useful in the workplace. Documents such as business letters, memos, short reports and full length formal reports up to 15 pages typed will be created throughout the course. There is an emphasis on producing documents with a professional appearance. This course is suited to students preparing for trades and apprenticeship programs or those interested in fields such as Engineering, Architecture, Science, Nursing and Industry.

Mathematics

Any of the following Grade 12 Mathematics courses can be used as the compulsory Math credit for the Mature Student High School Diploma.

It is important that students have the appropriate calculator required for each course. Cell phones and other electronic devices that can receive/transmit signals are not allowed for use on tests, quizzes, or exams.

Essential Mathematics (40S)

(1 credit)

This course allows students to experience math encountered in everyday life in a technological society. Students will focus on skills such as consumer applications, problem solving, decision making and spatial sense. Topics include: Analysis of Games and Numbers, Vehicle Finance, Statistics, Precision Measurement, Home Finance, Geometry and Trigonometry, Business Finance, and Probability. Students taking Essential Math are required to have a scientific calculator. This course is suited to students who do not intend to focus on Math and Science related fields in their post-secondary studies.

Applied Mathematics (40S)

(1 credit)

This course promotes numerical and geometrical problem solving techniques as they relate to the world around us. Students will solve problems primarily with the use of technology (graphing software or graphing calculator). Students taking Applied Math are required to have a graphing calculator such as the TI-83 Plus, TI-84, or TI-84 Plus. This course is suited to students preparing for trades and apprenticeship programs, or those interested in Business, Statistics, Nursing, or Math and Science related fields that do not involve a study of theoretical calculus in their post-secondary studies.

Pre-Calculus Mathematics (40S)

(1 credit)

This course involves a high-level study of theoretical math with an emphasis on problem solving and mental math. Students will gain background knowledge and skills for higher level calculus courses. Students taking Pre-Calculus Math are required to have a scientific calculator. This course is suited to students interested in higher level Math, Science, and Business related fields in their post-secondary studies. Pre-Calculus Math fulfills prerequisite requirements for many post-secondary programs.

Sciences

Any of the following Grade 12 Science courses may be used as elective credits for the Mature Student High School Diploma.

Biology (40S)

(1 credit)

Biology is the branch of science that deals with the study of living organisms. The course will mainly focus on Genetics. Topics include: Transmission of Character Traits, Mechanisms of Heredity and Inheritance, Function of DNA and Protein Synthesis, Evolution, and The 6 Kingdoms of Life. This course is suited to students interested in higher level Science related fields in their post-secondary studies.

Chemistry (40S)

(1 credit)

Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the chemical composition and properties of a substance or body. The course will focus on the fundamental principles of Chemistry. Topics include: Atomic Structure, Stoichiometry, Kinetics, Chemical Equilibrium, and Acids and Bases. This course is suited to students interested in higher level Math and Science related fields in their post-secondary studies. Chemistry fulfills prerequisite requirements for many post-secondary programs.

Physics (40S)

(1 credit)

Physics is the branch of science that deals with the understanding of natural phenomena. The course will focus on the concepts and the mathematics used to explain these phenomena with more emphasis placed on the concepts. Topics include: Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Atomic and Nuclear Physics, and the Wave Nature of Light and Sound. This course is suited to students interested in higher level Math and Science related fields in their post-secondary studies. It also fulfills prerequisite requirements for careers with Manitoba Hydro.

Social Sciences

Any of the following Grade 12 Social Sciences courses may be used as elective credits for the Mature Student High School Diploma.

Global Issues (40S)

(1 credit)

Global Issues is a course that will focus on the complex and often critical global issues that societies face today. Topics include: Media, Consumerism, Environment, Wealth and Poverty, and Gender. Student directed inquiry and the inquiry process will be the format of the course. This course is suited to students interested in Humanities related fields in their post-secondary studies.

Psychology (40S)

(1 credit)

Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. The course will provide an introduction to many different areas of Psychology such as: Research Methods, Personality Theory, Psychological Disorders and Treatments, Motivation and Emotion, Stress and Health. This course is suited to students interested in Humanities related fields in their post-secondary studies.

Other Courses

Community Service (41G)

(1 credit) or (0.5 credit)

This credit may be achieved by volunteer work. Participants are required to complete 110 hours of volunteer work for 1 credit or 55 hours of volunteer work for a 0.5 credit. The type of volunteer work and placement must be approved by the Adult Learning Centre prior to volunteer hours being applicable for credit. Please contact Soozy Petrides for more information.

Private Music Option (42S)

(1 credit) 

Private Music Option credits may be an option for students studying music. A music certificate showing evidence of standing from the Conservatory of Canada Program or the Royal Conservatory of Toronto is required. Please contact Soozy Petrides for more information.

Special Language Credits (40S)/(41G)

(1 credit) 

Special Language credits may be awarded to students that can demonstrate proficiency in languages other than English or French. Recognized credentials or successful completion of special language examinations will be required. Please contact Soozy Petrides for more information.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Credits

Attaining credits through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process may be an option to individuals with knowledge and skills from prior learning and/or experiences in the areas listed below:
