Scholarship, Bursary, and Student Aid Information

A bursary is money given to a student who demonstrates great financial need. Some Canadian bursaries are open only to Canadian citizens, and are usually based on such factors as community activities, athletics, single parent status, or disability. On the other hand, a scholarship is a type of financial aid that is usually awarded to students who demonstrate and are capable of achieving academic excellence.  While most scholarships in Canada are open to Canadian citizens only, non-Canadian citizens could also qualify for thousands of other available scholarships in Canada.

For instance:

  • Jobworks grants two $500 scholarships for grade 12
  • The $500 Chown, at the University of Manitoba, is awarded to one Jobworks student
  • Millennium Adult Learner Bursary is specifically for students attending Adult Learning Centres, such as Jobworks
  • Red River, University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg all have scholarships, as do most post-secondary institutions
  • Frequently, employers have scholarships for employees and/or families (i.e. U.F.C.W.), as do large organizations (i.e. Wendy’s and Wal-Mart)
  • LOOK HARD AND GET CREATIVE. For instance, the little known Jump Canada offers scholarships for those who hold a valid competitive license from Equine Canada in the hunter, jumper or equitation divisions.
